Villa-Lobos’s first string quartet unfolds with a certain nostalgia, enlivened by bursts of folk-inspired dance and concluding with a comical fantasia and a humorous fugue. Born in 1863 in Rio de Janeiro, Ernesto Nazareth is one of the first well-known composers of Brazilian origin; his music constantly bridges the gap between European models and the rich folk traditions of his country, which is what gives his piano pieces—transcribed here for guitar and string quartet—their charm. The solo guitar will also take centre stage with two concerto cadenzas: one, by Villa-Lobos, has become a ‘classic’, whilst the other, penned by a young Latin American composer, symbolises the vitality of the instrument’s new repertoire.
