### Vox Luminis
Early and Baroque music
August 1 2026 - 18:00
                                    The Church of St. Sebastian
Non-subscription concert and Honorary Members’ Evening concert
Vox LuminisLionel Meunier, conductor
Vox Luminis takes us on a veritable journey through time, offering the Stavelot audience a beautiful selection of motets by Johann Sebastian Bach – music in which the Leipzig Cantor draws inspiration from the choral tradition as conceived by Martin Luther in the 16th century. To the simplicity of the genre’s origins, Bach brings all his skill in the expression of emotions, transforming these prayers into true Baroque tableaux, rich in the colours of the instruments and intense fervour.
Programme:
Johann Sebastian Bach: Sing to the Lord a New Song, BWV 225Johann Sebastian Bach: The Spirit Helps Our Weakness, BWV 226Johann Sebastian Bach: On the Evening of That Same Sabbath: Sinfonia, BWV 42/1Johann Sebastian Bach: Jesus, My Joy, BWV 227Johann Sebastian Bach: Come, hasten and run, ye swift feet / Adagio, BWV 249Johann Sebastian Bach: Fear not, for I am with thee, BWV 228Johann Sebastian Bach: Come, Jesus, come, BWV 229

### Satellite Ensemble
String trio
August 3 2026 - 11:00
                                    The Monk's Refectory
Génération Classique
Ensemble Satellite:     Lia Manchon Martinez, violin     Coline Meulemans, viola     Marc Martin Nogueroles, cello
The exquisite transcription for string trio of Bach’s Goldberg Variations will lead the Satellite Trio into the intense and passionate music of the Dutch composer Emmy Frensel Wegener. And it is with the work of another composer, also performed for the first time at our Festival, that the winners of the ‘Génération Classique’ competition will demonstrate their infectious energy. Of Jewish origin and born in 1919 in Poland, Mieczyslaw Weinberg was one of the witnesses to the tragic fate of certain artists during that turbulent period; having taken refuge in the USSR, his career was fraught with obstacles, which he managed to overcome, thanks in part to the help of Dmitri Shostakovich.
A project by the Festivals de Wallonie. In partnership with the Conseil de la Musique and, more specifically, the 6x12 project. With the support of the National Lottery and its players, PlayRight and the PBA – Palais des Beaux-Arts de Charleroi.
Programme:
Johann Sebastian Bach: Goldberg Variations BWV 988 (excerpts)Emmy Frensel Wegener:  Suite for violin, viola and celloMieczyslaw Weinberg: String Trio Op. 48

### Conférence Jérôme Lejeune
Lecture: Romanticism according to Carl Maria von Weber
August 3 2026 - 16:00
                                    The Monk's Refectory
Lecture: Romanticism according to Carl Maria von Weber (1786-1826)
Jérôme Lejeune, musicologist and artistic advisor to the Stavelot Festival
Musical accompaniment by
Fanny Sarlette, clarinetJulie Noiret, piano
Works by Carl Maria von Weber and Johannes Brahms
In the imagery of nascent German Romanticism, Carl Maria von Weber embodies aspects that his two famous contemporaries, Beethoven and Schubert, did not illustrate. On the one hand, this involves the captivating virtuosity he masterfully displays on the piano, and which he also entrusts to instruments then in their infancy, such as the clarinet. This aspect will be demonstrated live by two young musicians from our region. But it is above all in the field of opera that he is most innovative, with works whose dramatic intensity and sense of the fantastical profoundly inspired composers such as Richard Wagner in the following generation. Weber was also a theatre director, and in this field he developed new visions that revolutionised the concept of how opera houses were organised.

Der Freischütz, revisited
Ensemble Wolf
Carl Maria von Weber’s \*Der Freischütz\* is the quintessential example of German Romantic opera, and it is well known that Richard Wagner held it in the highest regard. Ever since its premiere, arrangers have continually produced transcriptions for all manner of instruments. In towns where there were no theatres capable of staging such spectacular productions, this practice undoubtedly helped to introduce and popularise its impressive overture, as well as its most famous arias and choruses. The version by the Berlin-based Karl Flachs for wind ensemble dates from 1822.
Programme:
Ludwig van Beethoven:  Rondino, WoO 25Carl Maria von Weber: Der Freischütz (transcription for wind instruments by Karl Flachs).

### Les Mardis du Cinéma musical - Le Maître de Musique
1988 Belgian film in French
August 4 2026 - 16:00
                                    Cinéma "Le Versailles"
Gérard Corbiau’s Le Maître de Musique is a unique Belgian film, born from an intimate confidence shared by José van Dam and driven by a profound reflection on the transmission of art. The director’s first feature-length fiction film, released in 1988, it transcends the framework of the musical film to become a quasi-documentary meditation on the profession of the opera singer.

### Danish Clarinet Trio
Clarinet, cello, piano
August 4 - August 5 2026 - 20:00
                                    The Monk's Refectory
Sound explorations
The Danish Clarinet Trio     Tommaso Lonquich, clarinet     Jonathan Slaatto, cello     Martin Qvist Hansen, piano
Among the innovations of the Classical period was the emergence of new instruments. It is certainly to Mozart that we owe the clarinet’s first ‘letter of nobility’, for which he had found a magnificent virtuoso in the person of Anton Stadler. Admittedly, the cello is no ‘newcomer’, but in the works of Beethoven – who wished to win over Frederick William II, King of Prussia, who played the cello in his spare time – the assertion of its melodic and expressive role was entirely new in the realm of chamber music. As for Brahms, it was his encounter with the virtuoso Richard Mühlfeld that inspired him to write for the clarinet. Inexperienced in the solo use of this instrument, he drew on the model of Beethoven’s Opus 11 to conceive this first composition, in which the clarinet engages in a dialogue with the cello.
Programme:
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: Trio in E flat major, K. 498 (The Skittles Trio)Ludwig van Beethoven: Trio in B flat major, Op. 11                                             Johannes Brahms: Trio in A minor, Op. 114

Throughout their programme, the Jenlis Trio takes you on a journey from the Spanish sun to the Carpathian Mountains. Over the centuries, composers of classical music have drawn inspiration from traditional music, either to rediscover the musical heritage of their homeland or out of a fascination with other cultures. To the sound of the violin, cello and harp, this programme explores the influence of traditional music on composers such as Bartók and Piazzolla. The Jenlis Trio, a group of siblings, will captivate you with their familial rapport and the unique harmony of their instruments.

Two great Romantic trios
Trio Impromptu     Caroline Poncelet, violin     Alexandre Beauvoir, cello     Elodie Vignon, piano
Frédéric Chopin composed very few chamber music works. Apart from a few pieces for cello, mainly those dedicated to his friend Auguste Franchomme, the Trio Op. 8 is his most significant composition in this field. Fascinated by the melodies of Italian opera, it is in his Nocturnes that he best captures their spirit and lyricism. Franz Schubert’s Trio No. 2, Op. 100, is one of the last compositions in his extensive catalogue of chamber music. Its moving slow movement has been used many times as film music, most famously in Stanley Kubrick’s Barry Lyndon.
Programme:
Frédéric Chopin: Piano Trio in G minor, Op. Frédéric Chopin: Nocturnes, Op. 62                           Franz Schubert: Piano Trio in E-flat major, Op. 100, D. 929

### Quatuor Ardeo - Gaëlle Solal
Guitar – String quartet
August 10 2026 - 11:00
                                    The Monk's Refectory
Echoes of Latin America
Gaelle Solal, guitar
Ardeo Quartet     Mi-Sa Yang, violin     Sophie Williams, violin     Yuko Hara, viola     Joëlle Martinez, cello
Villa-Lobos’s first string quartet unfolds with a certain nostalgia, enlivened by bursts of folk-inspired dance and concluding with a comical fantasia and a humorous fugue. Born in 1863 in Rio de Janeiro, Ernesto Nazareth is one of the first well-known composers of Brazilian origin; his music constantly bridges the gap between European models and the rich folk traditions of his country, which is what gives his piano pieces—transcribed here for guitar and string quartet—their charm. The solo guitar will also take centre stage with two concerto cadenzas: one, by Villa-Lobos, has become a ‘classic’, whilst the other, penned by a young Latin American composer, symbolises the vitality of the instrument’s new repertoire.
Programme:
Heitor Villa-Lobos: Quartet No. 1, W099                   Heitor Villa-Lobos: Cadenza from the Guitar Concerto, W501       Clarice Assad: Cadenza from the concerto ‘O Saci-Peererê’                      Ernesto Nazareth: Suite for guitar and string quartet (arrangement for guitar and quartet: Elodie Bouny)

Journeys through Sonatas
Lorenzo Gatto, violin
Jean-Claude Vanden Eynden, piano
This programme invites you on a journey through the landscapes of the sonata, an intimate and expressive form par excellence. From the elegant, lilting light of Fauré to the delicate, pictorial hues of Jongen’s Aquarelles, the listener is guided through contrasting and sensitive worlds. Schubert’s Wanderer Fantasy, a work of movement and transformation, embodies romantic wandering and the yearning for distant lands. In response, Brahms’s Second Sonata offers a warm and profound respite, where lyricism and serenity echo one another. Between passion, contemplation and energy, this concert weaves a musical journey where each work becomes a stage, a landscape, an emotion — a true journey through sonatas.

Gabriel Fauré: Sonata No. 1 in A major, Op. 13Joseph Jongen: Aquarelles, Op. 59Franz Schubert: Wanderer Fantasy in C major, Op. 15Johannes Brahms: Sonata No. 2 in A major, Op. 100

Bach meets East

With     Ambi Subramaniam, violinSimon Leleux, percussion
Founded in 2024 by Lorenzo Gatto, the Karavan Ensemble views music as a journey, where rhythm carries the narrative and sound becomes a meeting place — as evidenced by their debut album Open Road.In Stavelot, the ensemble presents the Bach meets East project for the first time in Belgium, alongside violinist Ambi Subramaniam and percussionist Simon Leleux. This encounter gives rise to a lively dialogue between two musical worlds. At the heart of the programme is a reinterpretation of Bach’s Second Partita for solo violin. The famous Chaconne becomes an open space, where the composition flows naturally into improvisation. The lines evolve, the rhythms breathe differently, and new colours emerge — until the result is music that is both unexpected and familiar.

### Masterclasses I Cambristi, Stavelot
Chamber music classes for amateurs and semi-professionals
August 14 - August 16 2026 - 10:00

If you would like to join us, please visit this page:
Master Classs Stavelot 2026
The atmosphere is relaxed and we are fortunate to have the guidance of outstanding teachers.
We study the same work during the three days of classes and each group decides and prepares one or more movements of the score.
Our classes are at the Collège Saint-Remacle but on the last day, on 16 August at 4.00pm (free access), we give a closing concert in the Monks’ Refectory in the old Abbey.
Welcome to Stavelot, in this idyllic setting for chamber music!
Audition of the Master Class trainees
The closing concert of the Master Classes is always reserved for the trainees who have come to follow the courses and advice of such prestigious masters as the members of the Zemlinsky Quartet. Every year, dozens of them come to Stavelot and their nationalities are very diverse. During this last concert, the pleasure and talent shown by these young (and not so young...) musicians in interpreting the works they have worked on are such that the audience is totally in agreement with their approach and is delighted to see living music making so many musicians happy.

### Quatuor Zemlinsky - Quatuor Bennewitz
String quartets
August 14 - August 15 2026 - 20:00

Zemlinsky Quartet     František Souček, violin     Petr Střižek, violin     Petr Holman, viola     Vladimir Fortin, cello
Bennewitz Quartet     Jakub Fišer, violin     Štěpán Ježek, violin     Jiři Pinkas, viola     Štěpán Doležal, cello
Two ‘hits’ from the string quartet repertoire are juxtaposed with a masterpiece that is, sadly, all too little known. For Schubert and Dvořák, the Quartetsatz and the so-called ‘American’ Quartet are mature works which, since their premiere, have established themselves among the great masterpieces of the repertoire. Georges Enescu was 14 years old when he arrived in Paris in 1895. Dazzled by the musical life of the French capital, he very quickly established himself there as a composer of incredible inventiveness, writing this Octet at the age of 19 in a form unprecedented in French music of the time. Two Prague-based quartets have taken it up, responding to a request from the Stavelot Festival.
Programme:
Franz Schubert: Quartettsatz in C minor, D. 703               Antonín Dvořák: String Quartet No. 12 in F major, Op. 96 ‘American’           George Enescu: Octet in C major, Op. 7

Paul Dukas’s music tells the story of a sorcerer’s apprentice who tries to enchant a broom and entrusts it with the chore of filling buckets with water. The spell seems to work, but the apprentice gradually realises he is not in control of his magic: the broom quickly becomes uncontrollable; a flood is inevitable!
